    What is the Bradford Factor?

The Bradford Factor is a human resource management tool used to measure the impact and patterns of employee absences. It was developed by Bradford University School of Management in the 1980s. The formula puts emphasis on the frequency of absences rather than their total duration, based on the theory that shorter, more frequent absences are more disruptive to organizations than longer, less frequent ones.

    How is it Calculated?

The Bradford Factor score is calculated using the formula: B = S² × D

    Where:

    • S is the number of separate absences/spells of absence in 52 weeks
    • D is the total number of days of absence in 52 weeks
    • B is the Bradford Factor score

    Using this Calculator

Enter the number of separate absence occurrences and the total number of days absent. The calculator will provide a Bradford Factor score along with suggested management approaches based on your organization's typical threshold levels. Remember that these thresholds should be adapted to your specific organizational needs and circumstances.

Important Note: The Bradford Factor should be used as one of several attendance management tools, not in isolation. Consider factors such as:

    • The nature of absences (e.g., chronic conditions vs. casual absence)
    • Legal obligations regarding disability and reasonable adjustments
    • Patterns and causes of absence
    • Individual circumstances of each case
