Founded in 2017 by principals Mark Smyth, Sigrún Sumarliðadóttir Studio Bua is an architectural practice in London. The studio has to date realised a number of ambitious and concept-driven projects, including the renovation of an Icelandic farmhouse and cultural centre. Derived from the Icelandic word for ‘inhabit’, Studio Bua combines both a deep appreciation for quality craftsmanship and mastery of technology with a collaborative, hands-on approach, working to refine and elevate everyday spaces in the belief that it is our immediate surroundings that inform not just who we are, but how best we can live. A bespoke service Since no two projects are the same, our solutions are thoughtfully tailored. Extending beyond the bare bones of the traditional architectural scheme, each of our designs responds holistically to a client’s needs – focusing not only on the overall plan and structure of a building, but also the subtle details that often become its hallmarks. From original joinery to traditional Icelandic tiling, we source and craft bespoke elements that lend each design its unmistakable sense of place. An open dialogue Central to any successful build is a solid foundation of trust. That’s why we encourage an open and continuous dialogue with our clients from the outset, inviting their feedback to ensure they feel confident in partnering with us to realise their ambition. Because every project is a significant investment, we guide our clients through the contractual and technical aspects of the building process – but never without adhering to their concerns, or losing sight of budget. A 360° approach We use a variety of methods to rigorously test our work and accurately convey our vision. Modelling, drawing, photography, collage and prototyping all play an integral part in our research on how light, space and material can best combine to realise a site’s full potential.
