    Form-finding timber with Ergodomus

    The innovative timber design and fabrication company Ergodomus presents a course on computational timber design. In this course you will learn to design a timber waffle roof, obsidian rain pavilion and timber shell, all using Grasshopper 3D.

    Why form-finding?

    Today it is possible to model complex forms designed with timber using software free from static and constructive logic, resulting in drawn surfaces that appear to be randomly yet optimally generated. Combined with widely available access to Grasshopper 3D app development, form-finding can easily be integrated into the design process.

    01 Timber Waffle Roof

    Introduction
    In this case, the shape of the roof was substantially incorrect from a structural point of view. We managed to optimize it by 40%.

    The workflow you will learn
    1. Importing a model
    2. Redrawing geometry with algorithmic modeling
    3. Optimization with form-finding
    4. Exporting structural model in Rfem for finite element method (FEM) analysis
    5. Comparing results
    6. Importing results from Rfem to design the connection - extracting and visualizing internal forces of beams

    02 Obsidian Rain Pavilion

    Introduction
    Project description and goals: calculating deformation to maintain the final position of the stones unchanged, efficient management of the 1862 stones and ropes divided by rows and tagged for production and assembly.
