Hedgerows, Trees and the Planning System
Emma Marrington, rural policy specialist at CPRE, will talk about hedgerows, trees and the planning system - including what CPRE has done and is doing to help protect our amazing hedgerows.
Hedgerows are the vital stitching in the patchwork of our countryside. Not only are they beautiful, with shifting seasonal colours, but they also provide homes and corridors for wildlife. And all the while they help tackle the climate crisis by capturing carbon.
We’d like to see more hedgerows planted and restored, and are campaigning in support of the Climate Change Committee’s call for a 40% increase in the extent of hedgerows by 2050 to help tackle the climate emergency.
Learn about Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) and how to object to a planning application that includes hedgerow loss.
Information on hedgerows on the CPRE national website can be found here.
This talk is part of a series of Zoom talks (one per month from September 2021 to April 2022, all of them on a Wednesday evening) about all aspects of hedgerows, from field names to foraging and insects to how to manage your hedge for brilliant biodiversity!
This talk is part of CPRE Shropshire's Hedgerow Heroes project which runs in 2021/2022. As part of the project we will be creating 2km of new hedgerow in Shropshire, restoring .5km of older hedgerow, as well as delivering hedgelaying training to adults and young adults, running walks and talks and engaging with young children in Forest Schools.
