We are currently seeking a Firmwide Sustainable Design Leader in Decarbonization to join our Sustainability team. As a Sustainable Design Leader, you will be the firmwide thought leader and resource in decarbonization and responsible for Sustainable Design leadership of a regional practice. This role promotes design excellence working with all disciplines and is acutely involved in the positioning of the sustainability practice as well as the pursuit, win, and delivery of projects. RESPONSIBILITIES: Leadership Initiate project sustainable design concepts and idea discussions and provide guidance to design teams during project design and construction phases. Serve as a client liaison for the HOK project team in an active and contributing role throughout the life of the project. Maintain ongoing client relationships, post occupancy. Serve as t Sustainable Design and Decarbonization lead on projects. Guide and advise design teams on projects, providing sustainable design and decarbonization input to ensure consistent and high-quality design throughout the firm. Conduct technical and sustainable design reviews of projects. Assist in the preparation and delivery of sustainable design and decarbonization presentations to clients and drive consultant work to achieve project goals. Responsible for preparing fee and workload projections for projects. Understand and enforce conditions of client contract and applicable regulations around decarbonization Mentor by coaching and motivating design teams and individuals. Foster an environment of mutual respect, open communication and trust within team, discipline, and throughout the firm Participate in interviews and recruiting of professional staff. Business Development & Market Leadership Identify new business opportunities while developing current client relationships. Seek new project opportunities which may exist or are being formulated. Pursue independent consulting opportunities relevant to decarbonization expertise. Lead and participate in research, white papers, conference presentations and media interview requests relevant to decarbonization expertise. Responsible for the development and execution of the sustainable consulting business plan and managing marketing strategy; as well as the overall branding and development of HOK’s Sustainable Design Practice. Participate in relevant multi-disciplinary marketing and business development opportunities. Acts as key presenter in new project interviews. Develop and maintain positive relationships with consultants, contractors and community stakeholders resulting in increased potential business opportunities. Assist in development of fee proposals for marketing proposals and contract negotiation. Assist Marketing and Sustainable Design Knowledge Manager in development of marketing campaigns, collateral materials, webinars, etc. and overall proposal preparation. Assist in preparation of award submittals. Assist in the preparation of content for press releases, social media, and other materials relevant to decarbonization and sustainable design practice. Participate in local or state professional associations, maintain active membership, and participate in industry leadership activity outside of firm. Staff Development Serve as mentor/advisor to sustainability and other staff. Prepare and deliver design staff evaluations, responsible for performance development, compensation decision-making and allocation processes of department. Support diversity and develop continuing education opportunities (e.g., site visits, lectures, road trips) to expose design staff to influences which will stimulate design creativity and innovation. Participate in interviews and recruiting of professional staff. Encourage staff exploration and innovation to achieve project design excellence and continual improvement. Required Skills Significant talent in high performance design, electrification, refrigerants, grid integration, district energy, renewable energy and embodied carbon for projects of all scales. Advanced knowledge of decarbonization, sustainability, integrated design, trends, construction methodology, materials application and manufacturer-supplier relationships. Advanced knowledge in certification standards (LEED, BREEM, LBC etc.) Ability to manage the sustainable design group and project design teams with a collaborative leadership style. Ability to think strategically, implements change, enforces policy and resolve conflict. Thorough understanding of project work plans, schedules, staffing, and budgets. Demonstrated ability to execute projects profitably. Proven ability to prioritize oneself and the work of others in order to meet deadlines and provide high quality service to clients. Proven ability to create and maintain strong working relationships with external clients. Proven ability to masterfully present, effectively sell and negotiate the services of HOK. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Proficiency in the basic technical skills of the following computer skills: Proficiency in Deltek Vantagepoint preferred. Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel Outlook required. Understanding of and ability to interpret and apply results from energy modeling software: Ladybug Tools, IES, EnergyPlus, Climate Studio, Insight360, other Knowledge of Revit, AutoCAD and Sketchup preferred. Qualifications EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in interior design, architecture, engineering or relevant field required. Master’s degree preferred. 10 years’ experience including at least 3 years as senior level Leader with supervisory experience. Publications, speaking engagements and/or award-winning projects a plus. Registered Architect or Professional Engineer with current license preferred. Current LEED AP with Specialty required. Compensation is based on experience, qualifications, education and location. The typical salary for this position in New York City, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Denver is $140,000-$160,000. Other compensation may include a discretionary bonus.
