Architectural ambition serves as the driving force behind our practice, and we prioritize the quality of our work above all else. By doing so, we position ourselves to effectively serve our clients, support the professional growth of our team members, and maintain a thriving business.
Collaboration, combined with strategic leadership, is the key to realizing our architectural ambitions. This applies not only to the design of our projects but also to the management of our practice.
Our practice has evolved significantly since its founding in 1989, growing from four partners to a team of around 500 employee-owners today. This growth has reinforced our belief in the importance of investing in and nurturing diverse talent across all areas of our practice to sustain our ambition. We are committed to engaging with and contributing to the broader profession by openly sharing knowledge, experience, and lessons learned. Furthermore, we actively seek to engage with and make a positive impact on the wider world by sharing our skills and donating resources where they can have the greatest effect. Safeguarding the needs of our clients and the users of the spaces we design is paramount, and we value long-term relationships built on honesty, professionalism, and fairness. While we have a broad plan in place, we remain adaptable to challenges and opportunities, allowing space for the pursuit of new ideas.
We not only place importance on the quality of our work but also on the practice itself. We believe that our ambition to create exemplary architecture is underpinned by being a professionally run business and a supportive, enriching workplace.

Architectural ambition is central to our practice, but we also view the development of our practice and our people as essential projects in themselves. By investing in and nurturing diverse talent, we position ourselves to sustain our ambition effectively. Since September 2017, our employees have become majority owners of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris Ltd through the AHMM Employee Ownership Trust, which formalizes our belief that a positively engaged team is crucial for the success of our company and its work.
Our culture is rooted in strong leadership and a collaborative working method that relies on individuals taking on specific responsibilities to achieve collective goals. Our design process fosters constructive critique and demands active participation in drawing and design development, with the understanding that if something isn't drawn, it can't be discussed. This transparent process welcomes contributions from everyone and encompasses a broad range of architectural expertise. Our teams, led by directors, do not specialize by sector or work stage but instead function as like-minded smaller studios within our shared spaces, allowing for diverse design intelligence to flourish.
Our workplaces in London, Bristol, and Oklahoma City are designed to foster collaboration, with a variety of working environments and spaces for communal activities, such as shared meals, classes, and informal conversations. Regular opportunities for connection and socialization are integral to our practice, including weekly presentations, monthly project updates, and larger practice-wide events throughout the year. These events can range from our annual spring conference to city research trips during the summer. Sporting activities and creative opportunities, such as sketch clubs, crafting, photography, and cookery classes, are also part of our culture. Additionally, we organize building visits, talks, and curated gallery tours to deepen our understanding of our own work and its cultural context.
We prioritize having the right tools and resources to enable our architects to excel in their work. This includes providing necessary equipment, access to specialist skills and experience, and a collaborative approach between our Building Performance, Technical Design, Knowledge Management, and Digital Design teams. Models are a primary tool for communicating our architecture and its tangible and spatial qualities, and our fully equipped model shop is staffed by a skilled team of model makers.
At AHMM, we offer a range of benefits to support the personal and professional lives of our team members. These benefits include private medical and dental insurance, income protection, critical illness and life insurance, as well as an employee assistance program. We also have a parental leave policy that offers 13 weeks of full pay to all new parents with a minimum of one year's service. Additionally, as an employee-owned business, we believe in sharing the success and profits of the practice with our staff through a profit share scheme available after the probationary period.
While striving for internal excellence, we also reach out to improve our working practices and policies. Through our Employee Ownership Working Group, we encourage suggestions for enhancing our practices, and we facilitate other working groups focused on areas such as diversity and inclusion, gender equality, and well-being. Furthermore, our Partnerships Group engages in various community, cultural, and educational outreach initiatives, encouraging all team members to contribute their time, skills, and resources. More information about our partnerships can be found here.
