What does an architectural visualiser do?
An architectural visualiser helps people understand a proposed building or space through images, animation or interactive work. The brief might be an early design study, a planning view, a client presentation or a finished marketing image. Ask which outputs the role will involve; the title alone does not tell you.
Some roles sit inside an architecture practice and develop alongside the design team. Others sit in a specialist visualisation studio handling briefs from several clients. Compare the work, review process and responsibility as well as the software list.
- Show how you made the image.
A finished render shows the result. A short breakdown shows your judgement. Choose a small number of projects and explain the brief, the source model, what you built or changed, and how you approached lighting, materials, composition and post-production. Label your contribution clearly. If you received a model, used supplied assets or worked with other artists, say so. Only include work you are allowed to share.
- Show how you handle a changing brief.
Use an example of feedback or a design revision. Explain what changed, how you kept the image or scene organised and how you agreed the next version. If animation or real-time work matters to the vacancy, include evidence of that workflow rather than relying on still images alone.
- Match your evidence to the vacancy.
Identify the tools you used and the parts of the process you can handle independently. A software name on a CV is less useful than a clear example of the output, decisions and review involved.
Ask about the work before comparing offers.
- Who provides and checks the model, and who develops the scene?
- Is the priority design exploration, planning, marketing, animation or interactive work?
- Who briefs the artist and reviews the work? How are revisions and deadlines agreed?
- What hardware, software and time for learning are available?
- What permission would you have to show completed work in your portfolio?
