Beyond salary
Ask what comes with the title, such as a bonus or profit share, and how each is decided.
Associate is one band in our salary guide, with no split by years of experience.
The role
Associate, in plain terms.
An Associate usually sits between senior architects and directors. Alongside senior project work, the role adds client relationships, team leadership and commercial judgement.
The title means different things in different practices. Ask what you would lead, which decisions you would own and how fees, scope and quality would be part of your job.
Ask before you accept
- Which projects, clients and people would I lead?
- Which commercial decisions, such as fees and scope, would I own?
- What does the route to Associate Director look like?
