Self Excavation
Ekunremi's final design project showcases her sensitive and forward thinking approach to design. Self Excavation, is a metaphor for self-discovery - a journey to understand ones identity, place, and purpose.
Curved floor plans and bold spaces symbolise femininity, encouraging movement and exploration through the site using the five senses. The building layout integrates self-policing strategies and wellness-focused spaces for women. At its core, a cantilevered pool extends over a cliff - inviting users to confront their fears and embrace the unknown.

A closer look.
Sustainability and materiality are central to this design and inspired material research. Materials are used as representation; site-excavated chalk symbolising grounding techniques and copper symbolising reflection, sensitivity, and change. Thick masonry walls north of the site are used to shield against erosion from strong coastal winds and sea water.
