Nablus Cultural Education Centre
Hussein's master thesis project is centred on the historical yet derelict Touqan Palace in the ancient city of Nablus located in the West Bank, Palestine. The site, Touqan Palace, was first built in the 18th century for the wealthy Touqan royal family and was associated with many historical and literary figures. However, due to almost half a century of conflict and uncertainty, Touqan Palace has been neglected in its ruins for years. His project focuses on rebuilding this historical past for the future of the city, through reviving, protecting, and transferring the long-lost cultural knowledge through restoration and maintenance of this heritage. Through his thorough research, contextual and architectural analysis of the site, he identified the site’s needs for energy & economic independence and architectural regeneration. Hussein proposed a Heritage & Culture Education Centre which reintroduces traditional trades & practices to the younger generation of the community which will also provide self-sustainable economic opportunities to the local & wider community. The project also provides much-needed support and spaces for women to create connections and gain the skills and education to trade within the local community resulting in the revival of the lost traditional industries such as soap-making, glassware and other handicrafts and it's reintroduction to a new generation.
