VISAVA - A bio tourist resort in Malvan
“Bio-Tourism Resort at Malvan” is the undergraduate thesis project of Tanvi Shraddha Santosh Mestri, exploring the intersection of sustainable tourism and vernacular architecture in the Konkan region. Located in the coastal town of Malvan, the project emphasizes ecological sensitivity, cultural rootedness, and community participation. The resort is envisioned as a low-impact, immersive environment that encourages visitors to experience nature intimately while respecting the local ecosystem and traditions. The master plan is shaped by the site’s natural contours, existing vegetation, and river edges, resulting in a layout that blurs the boundaries between built and natural spaces.
The architectural approach draws inspiration from traditional Konkan construction techniques, incorporating laterite stone walls, Mangalore tile roofs, and passive ventilation strategies. The program includes cottages, a meditation hall, an exhibition space, and other community-focused facilities designed to be climate-responsive and energy-efficient. By integrating solar power, natural materials, and local employment, the project aims to create a model of responsible tourism that is both environmentally conscious and socially inclusive.
