The project
Beside the ring road and walking trails of Bernal Hill, this home has wide views over San Francisco and a close relationship with the public paths around it. Blue Truck Studio adds a partial third storey and roof deck, making more of the hilltop position without exposing every room to passers-by.
Openings are oriented away from the paths, with large planter boxes providing further screening. The glazed living spaces look out towards the city, while quieter rooms sit behind the house’s compact exterior.
A stair runs through the centre of the house to a sliding roof-deck skylight. Together they form a light well, bringing daylight into the core of the home and connecting the new upper level with the rooms below.
