The story

The story behind the work.

Light & Details is the refurbishment and extension of a free-standing single-storey brick bungalow in Kensington, New South Wales. Having recently spent time living in Europe, the owners returned with a fondness for traditional French provincial detailing and asked Hobbs Jamieson Architecture to interpret those sensibilities in their renovation. A little outside the studio's usual aesthetic, the brief became an absorbing challenge and a learning experience as the office worked through a wide range of traditional detail requests.

The original elements of the cottage were retained, with a double-height extension added to the rear to address the southerly frontage and further built form above. The outcome is a much larger family home that respects the existing fabric while opening up contemporary, light-filled living spaces.

The project covers 300 m2 across two levels, set on a 600 m2 site, and was completed in 2019.
