Project M

Project M began as a 1950s family house that had accumulated a series of disconnected alterations. Studio 15B stripped the building back, raised it and built underneath so the plan could support contemporary family life.

Reorienting the main rooms towards the northern rear aspect generated the project's distinctive M-shaped roof. A glazed side entry keeps a clear visual connection to the garden, while the lower floor provides a double garage, laundry and a self-contained suite for visiting grandparents.

A timber-batten stair leads to the main kitchen, living spaces, bedrooms, bathrooms and study above. Removing the ceiling over the open-plan living area exposes the roof structure and forms a double-raked clerestory, bringing northern light deep into the house and shaping its rear elevation.

Stacked decks extend family life outdoors. Existing weatherboards are paired with lightweight contemporary materials and selected face-brick elements, allowing the new work to acknowledge the house's earlier layers without imitating them.
