The Center at Belvedere
A community centre in Charlottesville gathers classrooms, fitness rooms and social spaces around a daylight-filled atrium overlooking woodland and a pond.

The place
Charlottesville, Virginia, USA
The Center at Belvedere provides spaces for social, learning and fitness activities for older adults in Charlottesville. Bushman Dreyfus Architects placed the long building along a hillside to make use of views across a pond towards woodland.
A two-storey atrium links the arrival area with gardens and an outdoor event space. The reception desk, café, seating areas and main stair make it a shared orientation point, with two programme wings extending from that hub.

Classrooms and activity rooms connect along a common corridor that leads back to the atrium. Large windows bring daylight into the rooms, while a broad rear porch provides outdoor space beside the building.
The design team included Lifespan Design Studio as senior centre design consultant, Circle Design Studio for interiors and Pray Design Associates for landscape. Barton Malow Company was the general contractor.
