Lump sum works better for tightly defined scope, and time charge for open-ended or early-stage work where the extent is genuinely unknown. Many appointments mix the three across stages. The percentage here is a starting point for that conversation, not a recommendation.

Being explicit about exclusions at the appointment stage prevents most fee disputes later.

Fees are usually distributed across stages rather than charged evenly, with the heavier proportions falling where the work concentrates. If you are appointed for only part of the stage range, the fee should reflect that share, not the whole. Adjusting the stage selection shows the difference.

If you are VAT registered, yes, at the standard rate. The calculator shows the fee excluding VAT and the gross figure separately so you can quote whichever the client expects. Private domestic clients usually want to see the VAT-inclusive number, because they cannot reclaim it.
