Common questions.

Practical answers for the questions people ask about this tool.

Is pro-rata pay always a simple fraction of full-time?

Usually, but not always. Most contracts scale salary by hours worked against full-time hours. Some scale by days instead, which gives a different answer if your days are uneven. Benefits can also scale differently to salary, and some do not scale at all. Ask which method the contract uses before relying on a figure.

How does holiday work on a pro-rata contract?

Statutory holiday is pro-rated too, so a part-time employee gets the same proportion of the entitlement rather than the full-time number of days. Bank holidays are where this most often goes wrong, particularly if your non-working day falls on a Monday. The holiday calculator covers this in more detail.

What does this calculator not include?

It shows gross pay only. Tax, National Insurance, pension and student loan all come off afterwards, and the thresholds for those are annual rather than pro-rated, which can change the proportion you keep. Run the result through the take-home calculator for the monthly picture.
