Questions people ask

Is Statutory Sick Pay all I will get?

SSP is the legal minimum, and many practices operate a more generous contractual scheme, often full pay for a set number of weeks. Check your contract and handbook first, because the contractual scheme usually replaces rather than adds to SSP.

How long can SSP be paid for?

Up to 28 weeks for one period of sickness. Linked periods of sickness close together can count together towards that limit. Beyond it, the question becomes long-term absence and whatever your contractual scheme and benefits provide.

Why does the amount change with my earnings?

Under the current rules SSP is the lower of a weekly flat rate and a percentage of your normal weekly earnings, so lower earners receive the earnings-based figure rather than the flat rate. Rates change each April, so check the current figure on GOV.UK before relying on it.
