FAQs
Common questions.
Practical answers for the questions people ask about this tool.
Am I entitled to be paid for overtime?
Only if your contract says so. There is no general right to overtime pay in the UK, and many architectural contracts state that reasonable additional hours are included in salary. What the law does require is that your average pay does not fall below the National Minimum Wage once all worked hours are counted, which is where persistent unpaid overtime can become a genuine problem.
What is this calculator actually showing me?
The value of the hours you are working beyond your contracted week, priced at your effective hourly rate. It is most useful as preparation for a conversation: it turns "I work a lot of late nights" into a specific annual figure, which is far harder to wave away.
How do I raise this without it going badly?
Bring a record rather than a feeling. Track the hours for a few weeks, present the pattern and its cause, and ask what can change — resourcing, deadlines, scope or time off in lieu. Framing it around delivery rather than grievance tends to get a more useful response.
