About

About Studio Workshop.

Established in early 2014, Studio Workshop is a Gold Coast practice that operates at the intersection of design, technology, craftsmanship and the built environment. It is equal parts design studio and fabrication workshop, combining advanced computational design, in-house digital fabrication (CAD/CAM manufacturing) and time-tested hand-craft to deliver results tailored to the needs and parameters of each client and site.

The team's collective experience spans small-scale bespoke items, furniture, interior fit-outs, signage and building facades through to full residential, commercial and civic projects. Services cover design, custom fabrication and construction, often taking a project from concept through every phase to completion.

Operating from the Gold Coast, Studio Workshop has developed and implemented work across the east coast of Australia, with projects in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Mackay, as well as Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Japan and the United States. The practice draws on robotic fabrication, modular assembly, flat-pack and pre-fabricated construction strategies to deliver remote projects of considerable complexity.

Studio Workshop is a collaboration between co-founders Rory Spence and Joel Hutchines, joined in 2015 by Jonathan Nelson and Chris Knapp. The four practice directors share academic and professional backgrounds in architecture, augmented by practical experience in building trades and on-site construction.
