The story
The story behind the work.
Allan Street House sits on a quiet side street in Brunswick, in inner Melbourne. It is a renovation and extension of an existing worker's cottage, reworked for a young couple and their two small children.
The design asks what a Brunswick worker's cottage can be, and what kind of life it can offer a growing family. Rather than chase a large backyard, the project leans into its setting: a central location, easy access to local parks, and an acceptance that in inner Melbourne, space is a premium. The result turns a cramped terrace into a home that feels light and open, sustainably designed and adaptable to the daily routines of family life.
The works cover a compact 60 square metre footprint on a 315 square metre site, arranged over a single level, and were completed in 2017.
