The project

The wedge-shaped site sits between two roads on a steep hill, with views over the city. Facing the street, a traditional form in reclaimed brick and slate is cut through by two contemporary masses of timber and slate. At the rear, small patios and planting bands form a secret garden around an existing 300-year-old pear tree.

A single-storey garage with a green roof, wrapped by the historic stone wall, gives the first floor an outdoor space linked to the garden. Bedrooms are set into the hillside to keep them quiet. Reclaimed materials continue inside, with bicycle handlebars as handrails, anglepoise lamps on the reclaimed steel roof structure and furniture designed by Artel31.

The timber upper storey projects over the brick gable.
A three-storey glazed elevation faces the garden.
The living room beneath the exposed steel roof structure.
A kitchen with patterned tiles and pendant lights.
The house lit at night above the street.
