ENISHI Resort Villa
A collaborative island hotel brings undulating concrete floors and deep internal voids to Penghu.
Tall central void connecting the hotel’s circulation spaces
The project
ENISHI Resort Villa is a three-storey hotel on Taiwan’s Penghu Island, developed through a collaboration between Japanese and Taiwanese architects. The client’s connection to her island and family informed a brief for a small hotel rooted in its setting.
An enclosed concrete exterior gives way to undulating floor plates and deep voids that carry light through the building. Shared spaces and guest rooms sit within this continuous interior, with a restrained palette of concrete, metal and glass.

Steel stairs and walkways crossing the planted concrete courtyard.
In its project account, CHIASMA describes translating recordings of the client’s and architect’s brainwaves into floor and void geometries. The resulting architecture was developed through a seven-year design and construction process, completing in 2018.
The project credits include CHIASMA FACTORY, Norisada Maeda Atelier, Kai Architects, Atelier SHARE and structural designer A.S.Studio. Ryuji Shiraishi’s photographs document the building.
