Maitland Riverlink

Maitland, New South Wales, Australia · 2018

1 / 3

A brick and timber civic gateway reconnects Maitland’s High Street with the Hunter River and creates a sheltered place to gather.

The project

Maitland Riverlink makes a direct connection between High Street and the Hunter River. CHROFI worked with McGregor Coxall and Maitland City Council to establish a new route through the town’s historic streetscape, drawing public activity towards the riverside.

The building frames that route with angled brick walls and a broad timber-lined roof. Its geometry gives the gateway a clear presence from the street and river, while providing shade and places to pause within the passage. Handmade bricks relate the new work to the surrounding townscape.

Public activity around the gateway from High Street

Public amenities and a café and restaurant occupy the sides of the gateway. The central covered space supports everyday use as well as community events, bringing movement, seating and informal gathering together in one public setting.

The landscape and building form part of the wider Levee public-realm project. Riverlink’s connection to the river allows the new civic space to work with the town’s existing streets and waterfront. The building was completed in 2018.
