A new civic square and landscape that reconnect the Grade I listed town hall with everyday public life.
The story
The restoration of Rochdale Town Hall combined conservation work by Donald Insall Associates with a new public realm by Gillespies. Removing roads and parking allowed the Grade I listed building to address a pedestrian civic square designed for markets, large events and daily community use.
The landscape extends Rochdale's textile story through patterned stone, planting, historic lighting and glazed terracotta seating developed with artists and specialist makers. Lawns and routes connect the town hall with the cenotaph, memorial gardens and other cultural landmarks.
The official page records the core town hall project as complete. A separate £1.6 million programme at Broadfield Park Slopes is described as underway and is not presented here as part of the completed square.
