A new glazed rooftop suite opens a listed canal-side house to the light and views of London.

The project
A new top for a canal-side house
Paul Archer Design replaced a crude rooftop addition to a listed house beside Regent’s Canal with a more considered upper floor. The brief combined a new main bedroom suite with generous clothes storage and the integration of solar panels.

The bathroom combines a rooflight with a view towards the canal
Opening towards the water
The south-facing elevation is entirely glazed. Three sliding doors follow the proportions of the house below, with two thirds of the opening able to slide back. The fixed section sits above the staircase.
A continuous lavender planter forms part of the balustrade. Seen from the bedroom, its planting frames the view across the canal towards the city.

Room for everyday life
A wardrobe runs through the depth of the house, answering the client’s need for extensive clothes storage. A rooflight brings daylight into the otherwise enclosed centre of the new upper floor.
