Woodview Barn
A new house outside Cambridge that reinterprets the black-clad barn as a precise, modern rural building.
Woodview Barn with its black timber cladding and red tiled roof.
The project
Woodview Barn replaces a farmhouse outside Cambridge that was too dilapidated to save. Planners asked for a house that looked like an old barn, with black timber cladding and a red tiled roof, and Ashworth Parkes Architects treated this as an opportunity.
Rather than imitate local farm buildings, the design reinterprets them as a new rural vernacular. Brick, black-stained timber, red clay tiles and mill-finish aluminium are detailed with 21st-century precision. The timber frame was made off site, so the two widths of cladding board line up across both storeys.
Lights, taps and vents are hidden behind the rain-screen cladding, and frameless picture windows frame views on every side. Inside, bespoke details include a cocktail bar and table in perforated brass.
