A starting point for
your pay conversation.
Benchmarks are a guide, not guaranteed offers. Compare the range with your responsibilities, experience, benefits and current job adverts.
Compare responsibility behind the midweight title.
A midweight role might centre on concept design, FF&E, technical delivery or a combination. Read the benchmark alongside the decisions you would own and the support around you. The same title can describe different work in different studios.
Ask which parts of a project you will own.
- Will you develop concepts, produce technical information, manage FF&E schedules or coordinate several of these?
- How much client, supplier and contractor contact will you handle?
- Who checks specifications, budgets and drawings before they are issued?
- Are site visits, procurement or junior-team support part of the role?
- What would you need to demonstrate at the next pay or progression review?
Prepare one example of a decision you owned.
Show a project where you balanced the design intent with a material choice, budget constraint or coordination issue. Explain what you proposed, who approved it and what happened next. Use only the responsibility and outcome you can substantiate.
Then ask: “How does the salary reflect the project stages and responsibility we have discussed?” Compare the answer with hours, working pattern, travel and the wider offer, rather than treating the benchmark as an automatic entitlement.
Read the midweight interior designer role guide and prepare your project evidence with the interior design interview guide.
