A good architecture job advert is not a wall of requirements. It is a clear explanation of the opportunity, the work, the team and why the right candidate should pay attention.
If the advert could belong to any practice, it is too generic. Candidates need enough detail to decide whether the role is worth their time.
Watch: why weak job boards and adverts lose candidates
This Architecture Social video is relevant because an architecture job advert has to compete for attention in a market where many listings look the same.

Write for the right candidate
Start with the person you actually want to attract. A Part II role, project architect role and associate role need different evidence, different salary expectations and different selling points.
- Name the role level clearly.
- Explain project type, sector and stage.
- Be honest about responsibility.
- Include software requirements.
- Share salary range, benefits and working pattern where possible.
- Explain what makes the practice or team distinctive.
Make the advert specific
Specificity is not about writing more. It is about replacing vague claims with useful information. Instead of saying exciting projects, explain the project type, scale or stage.
Instead of saying competitive salary, give a range or at least enough context to avoid wasting everyone’s time.
Use a human tone
Candidates can tell when an advert has been copied from a template. Keep it professional, but make it sound like a real practice with a real role.
Common mistakes
- Listing every possible skill as essential.
- Forgetting salary, location or hybrid working.
- Using generic phrases that do not explain the role.
- Making the practice sound bigger, smaller or glossier than it is.
- Not giving candidates a clear next action.
Architecture Social view
Stephen’s recruiter view is that job adverts are part of employer branding, but only if they are honest. The best adverts attract better-fit candidates because they make the trade-offs clear.
