Training and review
Ask which software and training the practice pays for, how overtime works and when your pay is first reviewed.
Interior design has its own ladder in our salary guide, from Graduate to Design Director.
The role
Junior Interior Designer, in plain terms.
A Junior Interior Designer supports the team on live projects: drawing layouts and details, building sample boards, sourcing materials and furniture, and keeping FF&E schedules up to date.
Studios use the title differently. Ask how much of your week is drawing and how much is sourcing, who checks your work and how soon you would run part of a project.
Ask before you accept
- Which software would I use: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit or Photoshop?
- Would I go to client meetings and site, or mainly produce drawings?
- Who would mentor me, and what is the route to Interior Designer?
Prepare
Show how you think, not just what you drew.
Bring your best four or five projects, student work included, with sketches, sample boards and drawings, and your part in each made clear.
