The story

The story behind the work.

Beijing Performing Arts Centre brings an opera house, theatre and concert hall together beside the Grand Canal in Tongzhou. The buildings sit on a shared plinth that extends their foyers into the surrounding park, with forms that refer to canal-side storehouses, boat sails and a theatre curtain opening.

A metro station, ramps and an always-open public plinth make the complex part of the wider district rather than an isolated arts venue. Air-quality controls, water-saving fixtures and a high-performance facade contributed to a China Three Star environmental rating. Completed in 2023, the project is recorded as a Perkins&Will and Schmidt Hammer Lassen collaboration, with no Mario Romero credit inferred.
