The story
The story behind the work.
Shanghai Library East is conceived as a large carved volume floating above two pavilions in a public park. A 1,200-seat performance venue, exhibition and events space, children's library, courtyards and gardens broaden the building beyond book storage into a civic place for culture and learning.
Inside, a seven-storey atrium links reading rooms, exhibitions, a cafe and public art through bamboo, oak and terrazzo. The 1,237,849 sq ft building completed in 2022 for Shanghai Library and Shanghai Pudong Government.
