The story behind the work.
Stephen George + Partners was appointed delivery architect for the Derbyshire Rail Industry Innovation Vehicle, a training, research and commercial facility in Chesterfield. Classrooms, digital laboratories and workshops support the rail sector beside the historic Barrow Hill Roundhouse.
The building was reconfigured to avoid a protected embankment and to respond to realigned railway lines in a live environment. Its industrial cladding, contrasting roof finishes and generous glazing were developed for the heritage setting, with the official source recording completion in 2026.
