The project
Entwined Matters turns textile off-cuts from clothing factories into ropes, using a simple twisting technique that anyone can learn. Each off-cut keeps its own pattern, colour and texture, so every rope is different.
Fragile fragments that would usually be thrown away become strong, durable material. The process avoids shredding and specialist machinery, so it can be adopted almost anywhere.
The ropes were shown in Know the Ropes, an exhibition in the abandoned district office of Valga, Estonia, as part of the VARES residency within the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 programme. The off-cuts were donated by a garment factory in Valga.
