The project

Leopoldstadt, still known as the Mazzesinsel, remains a centre of Jewish life in Vienna, and a nearby Jewish association shaped the concept from the start. The design aims for a quiet dialogue with its surroundings, with spaces for meeting and for privacy.

Natural stone, wood, cotton and linen set the tone, while cacti and palms appear throughout the building as a gentle reference to desert landscapes. The idea of kosher-friendly rooms also grew out of the character of the place.

A guest room behind a timber-framed door.
A green bench lines the corridor.
A green dining nook with a banquette.
Velvet banquettes under wall lights and a mural.
A terracotta bathroom with an oval mirror.
