Island Surcyclage is a community-led, self-build proposal for Eel Pie Island that responds to development pressure and environmental risk through circular design and incremental construction. Using reclaimed materials and low-tech methods, the scheme introduces flexible workspaces, communal decks, and public amenities built in phases by local residents. Elevated on gabion foundations, the structures are flood-resilient and modular, allowing the community to expand and adapt the site over time. The proposal combines ecological responsibility with creative autonomy, offering a replicable model for sustaining grassroots, maker-driven communities within vulnerable urban environments.
