National Museum of African American History and Culture

The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture gives architectural form to histories and cultural narratives that were long underrepresented on the National Mall. Its three-tiered corona draws on the form of a Yoruban caryatid and uses a bronze-coloured outer screen to filter daylight and solar heat.

Galleries extend below ground, while a contemplative court, front porch and carefully positioned exhibits support different ways of encountering the collection. Completed in 2016, the 397,000 sq ft museum achieved LEED Gold. The official source credits Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroup, with Adjaye Associates as lead design architect and The Freelon Group, now part of Perkins&Will, as architect of record; this record preserves that collaboration.
