The story
The story behind the work.
Three Waves is Tonkin Liu's radical reworking of Dover's seafront Esplanade. The scheme is conceived as three distinct artworks, the Lifting Wave, the Resting Wave and the Lighting Wave, each one growing out of its social and environmental setting and the way it is built.
The design was the winning entry in a competition run by the Landscape Institute on behalf of Dover Harbour Board, Dover District Council, Kent County Council, SEEDA and English Heritage. Completed in 2010, the public realm scheme covers around 10,000 square metres of Dover's coastline.
