Atkinson Green
A renovation reconnects the kitchen, pantry, laundry and living spaces of a mid-century home, extending its slate flooring and pairing blackbutt with walnut finishes.
New kitchen joinery and retained slate flooring at Atkinson Green
The project
Atkinson Green is a renovation of an existing mid-century home. Northern Edge Studio’s work concentrates on improving the kitchen, pantry, laundry and the relationship between the living and dining spaces while retaining the house’s established character.
Slate flooring provides continuity between old and new. The practice matched the existing floor in the living and dining rooms and extended the material into other rooms, allowing the new work to sit within the original interior rather than read as a separate addition.

Kitchen passage beside full-height timber joinery
Blackbutt timber cladding and walnut finishes bring depth to the joinery. Open shelves, a restrained colour palette and concealed utility spaces keep the kitchen practical while allowing the material character of the house to remain prominent.
Full-height windows and the grooved ceiling remain important features of the interior. Bespoke furniture and carefully selected furnishings complete the rooms, balancing the period setting with the requirements of a contemporary home.
