The story
The story behind the work.
Anomaly treated the neighbouring buildings as distinct pieces of architecture while joining them through a shared approach to contemporary workspace, cycle facilities, retail and a roof terrace.
At 41 Corn Street, the concrete frame and fins were repaired and clarified. At Grade II-listed Gilbert House, Portland stone, metalwork, original floors and Art Deco details were restored and paired with restrained new materials.
The two neighbouring buildings retain distinct identities within Bristol’s City and Queens Square Conservation Area. Grade II listed Gilbert House was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott as a bank; 41 Corn Street is a 1960s concrete building originally used by Bristol & West building society.
The refurbishment restores concrete fins and textured panels at No. 41, adding bronze-framed glazing and reception finishes including copper and terrazzo. At Gilbert House, Portland stone detailing, metalwork, timber floors and original terrazzo are retained or restored. Both buildings provide contemporary offices, cycle facilities and street-facing food and drink space, with a communal roof terrace.
