The story

The story behind the work.

EDEN rethinks the conventional residential tower as a vertical garden in Singapore's Newton district. Heatherwick Studio moved the services to the building's perimeter so that each of the 20 apartments could centre on a large living space surrounded by private rooms and shell-like balconies.

The apartments begin 27 metres above an intensely planted ground-level garden. Within the 18-metre-high lobby, planted chandeliers rise through the building and become private outdoor spaces, while alternating balconies create double-height gardens with more than 20 plant species.

Natural materials, deep planting and shade connect high-rise living with Singapore's landscape. The official studio page records the project as completed in 2020.
