Heatherwick Studio's King's Cross home transforms a 1970s office into a workshop, studio and public window onto making.
The story
Making House is Heatherwick Studio's four-storey home in King's Cross, created from a 1970s office formerly occupied by Diesel Industries. Large street-facing windows and a timber facade make the building's workshop, models and experiments visible from Argyle Street.
The ground floor combines a working model shop with an archive of full-scale prototypes and objects from the studio's projects. A blue stairwell, timber storage and material displays make the process of testing and making part of the building's identity.
The studio opened Making House to the public through the 2024 Open House Festival, when the official page records 1,600 visitors. It is presented as both a workplace and a place for public engagement with design.
