A Stockholm waterfront district that connects housing, movement, energy, water and waste through a circular urban model.
The story
Hammarby Sjöstad transformed contaminated industrial harbour land into a mixed urban district. White records the neighbourhood as home to 28,000 residents and 10,000 workers, with compact housing, public transport, walking and cycling routes connected to parks and the waterfront.
White contributed to the planning process, masterplanned ten neighbourhoods, designed mixed-use buildings and coordinated environmental design. The Hammarby model links land use, transport, energy, water and waste, with the practice reporting a 50% reduction in energy use and carbon emissions against the Swedish average for new builds.
