The story

The story behind the work.

The Reuben Young People's Centre transforms an inpatient ward at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for paediatric and adolescent patients. Natural materials, warm colour, biophilic details and commissioned artwork replace a conventional clinical atmosphere with a calmer and more familiar setting.

Staff, clinical teams, young people and the wider arts programme informed the layout, lighting, wayfinding and quieter spaces. The retrofit retained existing fabric, reduced waste and upgraded building systems during a June to November 2024 programme.
