Market -- Canal -- Port-City

Here is Mabel's Fifth Year design project, calling for a reading of urban history through textures and local stories embedded in pockets of the city neglected from official archives. The project investigates Khut-Kang, a market that sits on a covered canal leading to Kaohsiung’s harbour. Thrived in the 60s through the illegal selling of foreign goods and declined in the 90s while the original community remains, the project intervenes in the market with new archival spaces and explores the relationship between the two archives: the market as a living archive and the archive of the port city’s images.
