studio ARGUS has restored a 1910 hotel in Viljandi Old Town around a glass-roofed atrium, blending modern interiors with hints of Art Nouveau.

The project
The neo-Renaissance Park Hotel on Laidoner Square was built in 1910 by the businessman Andres Ormesson. It later served as a wartime hospital and as schools before standing empty for years. New owners bought it at auction in 2016 and reopened it in July 2018 as a design-led hotel with 37 bedrooms and a restaurant.
Almost none of the original interior survived, so the interior architecture by studio ARGUS, working with LUMIA, interprets the past in a modern key. A former inner courtyard is now a high, glass-roofed atrium, its old red brick walls restored and crossed by timber bridges at different heights. A new lift cage follows the style of the period.
Bedrooms have high ceilings and wall panelling based on an old panelled door found in the basement, with calm colours offset by deep velvet curtains and furniture. The restaurant on the first floor pays tribute to the artist Villem Ormisson, the landlord’s son.
