The project

The Episcopal Castle at Vastseliina became a pilgrimage site after a miracle was reported in 1353 and now serves as an experience centre for medieval life. The Pilgrims’ House, completed in 2018, joins the castle ruins and an old pub house above the Piusa valley.

The building is set into the slope so it does not block views of the ruins, and in summer it is partly veiled by trees. Inside, spacious rooms, heavy doors, hidden stairs, brick floors and small castle-like windows create a quiet medieval mood in a contemporary building.

The house on the slope above the stream.
A long table beside wine barrels under an iron chandelier.
A dining room with timber tables and a hearth.
A white room with brass chandeliers and sheepskin benches.
A guest room with simple timber beds.
