The project
William Tozer Associates extended and refurbished this Victorian house in Stoke Newington around a series of rectangular openings. White-rendered and slate-clad volumes are offset from one another, with frameless glazing cutting through their walls and roofs.
The ground-floor kitchen, dining and living spaces share views of the garden. A mirrored wall repeats those views and the surrounding openings, while timber surfaces connect the interior to the decking outside. Built-in storage and concealed doors keep the edges of the rooms clear.
Built-in storage gives the bedroom a clear, continuous wall.
An open-riser timber staircase continues the house’s sequence of framed views. On the upper floors, the same approach appears in the desk and window surround and in the wall between bedroom and bathroom.
The practice relates the exterior composition to Gordon Matta-Clark’s Conical Intersect. Inside, that interest in cutting through a building becomes a practical way to connect rooms, daylight and the garden.
