The story
The story behind the work.
The Engine Room transforms 42,000 sq ft within Battersea Power Station into a flexible workplace for IWG and the power station team.
Studio Sutton worked with the Grade II* listed industrial fabric rather than masking it, using the scale and material character of the building to organise co-working, meeting and shared amenity spaces. The project creates a contemporary working environment while keeping the power station's identity central.
A raised, double-height business club looks towards the power station’s heritage brick façade. Meeting rooms, work booths and social retreats offer different levels of privacy, while perimeter routes connect breakout areas, a café and flexible offices. Some offices look into the restored turbine halls.
Cherry wood joinery, dark finishes, black furniture and lighting, and rusty red upholstery complement the industrial structure. Large curtains allow the central platform to be separated for events.
