The Life Project

Derick Okelo's Master's project, The Life Project, reimagines the sensitivity of burials by proposing a revolutionary and sustainable approach to honoring loved ones. Tasked with designing a processing facility for a specific site, Derick's research revealed the urgent issue of burial space shortages in London. This inspired him to explore an innovative method that transforms human remains into compost, which can be used to plant gardens, restore forests, and even clean urban air. The facility's design draws inspiration from the infinity symbol, reflecting the concept of life continuing after death. Viewed from above, the building forms a figure-eight shape, while its side profile resembles the outline of a baby, symbolizing rebirth and renewal. The facility houses composting chambers in the basement, while the ground floor features a lush garden nurtured by the compost, extending into a dense forest landscape. By addressing burial space scarcity and promoting environmental benefits, The Life Project creates a transformative and meaningful space that merges sustainability with emotional resonance.
